Dune Buggie Kits

A Dune Buggie Kits Primer

Car kits have been around for years.  You can build a replica of many of the old sports cars and a lot of the classics.  Even replacement parts are being manufactured in kit form so that if you are restoring a car you can mix plastic and steel to complete the car.  Probably the biggest market has developed in the area of dune buggie kits.  Kits are now made for both on and off road.  Soft top kits are available as are storage compartments.  The enterprising hobbyist can build the dune buggie of his or her dreams in their backyard or garage.

Bandit, Berrian Buggy,Sunray Products Corp., and Classic Antique Repair Car Specialist are just a few of the manufactures that offer dune buggy kits.  Many others can be found and many are in your locality. Before you begin to shop you need to be clear on a few important concepts.  Are you going for on or off road use?  Off road dune buggies need to be safe.   On road dune buggies need to be safe and comply with applicable state motor vehicle laws before they can be licensed.  From a time and money standpoint you are better off making the on or off road decision before you make your first purchase.  Changing your mind to go from an off road buffie to an on road buggie could be expensive once construction has gotten underway.

Dune buggie kits are not created equal.  Some will require more accessory parts and  some will require more workmanship than others.  Research the car kit online first to determine what will be needed.  Get an estimate of the hours required to assemble it.  Find out exactly what parts come with the kit.  You will want to use this data to compare the various kits in determining their value per dollar spent.

The basic dune buggie kits will all come with the body shell.  Be sure that the shell that you are considering will fit the frame that you are going to put it on. Some are made for long frames and some are made for short frames.  Since the early days of the original Meyers Manx dune buggy the available styles have changed.  The classic is still there but you may also be interested in the Lamborghini or Corvette shapes as well.  Look for windshields,  side panels, and wiring harnesses. If they are not included in the kit you will have to buy them extra.
